Sweet hotel in between Ontonagon and the Porcupine Mountains. Comfy log cabin vibe. Very clean. Across the street the hotel has a great beach access with incredible views of Lake Superior and a beautiful beach. Gracious hosts greeted us.

One has to manage expectations for a motel in a remote rural area, but this one exceeded all our expectations. Exceptionally clean and comfortable, more amenities than one might expect for a property of this type. There was a bonfire for a social gathering, and a path to Lake Superior lined with cute displays such as a gnome house. About the only thing I would have liked that I did not have was a chair for the room. On the other hand, I'm not sure where it could fit. But no question I would stay again if I'm in the area.

My husband and I stayed here while traveling between Houghton and the Porkies. The owners were very friendly and the rooms were great. We loved the cabin decor and the evening fire with the owner and other guests that came out. The resort owns property across the street on Lake Superior, which was perfect for sunset, sunrise, rock finding, and fortunately for us, the Northern Lights. We will definitely stay here again!

Meet your hosts Anthony & Nou Basler

From the sandy shores of Green Bay and Lake Michigan to the rugged beauty of Lake Superior, our journey has been anything but ordinary. In 2019, we stumbled upon a hidden gem in Ontonagon, Michigan—the Sunshine Motel & Cabins—and knew we had found something special. Fast forward to March 2020, and we traded in our day jobs for the wild world of motel ownership… just in time for a global pandemic. Great timing, right?

Nou, a dedicated educator with over 15 years of experience, has a knack for keeping things running smoothly (and making sure Anthony stays out of trouble). Anthony, a Theologian and ordained Minister, now spends his days preaching the good word of hospitality, bonfires, and Bigfoot sightings. Together, we’ve embraced this adventure of welcoming travelers, sharing stories, and proving that a mom-and-pop motel in the UP can be just as exciting as a road trip across the country.

Speaking of road trips, when we're not running the motel, you’ll find us cruising across America, eating our way through every diner, food truck, and small-town bakery we can find. We love meeting people from all walks of life, learning new traditions, and occasionally getting lost in the middle of nowhere (thanks, Anthony). These experiences fuel our passion for making Sunshine Motel & Cabins more than just a place to stay—it’s a home base for adventure, relaxation, and some good old-fashioned UP charm.

So whether you're here for the Porcupine Mountains, Lake Superior sunsets, a Bigfoot hunt, or just a break from reality, we’re ready to welcome you with Yooper hospitality, a few dad jokes, and maybe even a pasty recommendation or two.

Let the adventures continue—because life’s too short for boring stays!
