From Shore to Shore: Our Sunshine Journey

We never planned to become motel owners — until a 2019 road trip led us to a little slice of Upper Peninsula paradise. Traveling from the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan to the wild shores of Lake Superior, our path eventually brought us to Ontonagon, where we fell head over heels for a charming, slightly weathered motel called Sunshine.

In March 2020 — with what turned out to be impeccable timing — we traded our old lives (Nou as an educator, Anthony as a minister) for the world of hospitality, just as everything else seemed to slow down. It didn’t take long to learn that some of the most meaningful adventures begin with less-than-perfect timing.

These days, you’ll usually find us here on the property. Nou brings a teacher’s patience to explaining Upper Peninsula weather patterns (yes, it really can snow in May), while Anthony puts his theology degree to work settling friendly debates about the best local pasty shops. Both of us share a love of road trips, quirky diners, and getting to know the people who pass through this part of the U.P.

At Sunshine Motel and Cabins, we’ve shaped the kind of place we always wished existed on our own travels — one that’s comfortable, welcoming, and uncomplicated. Guests are treated like people, not room numbers. Local tips come with hand-drawn maps and no corporate script. The goal is simple: genuine Upper Peninsula hospitality and an easy place to land at the end of the day.

Whether you’re here to hike the Porcupine Mountains, explore Lake Superior’s shoreline, hunt for Bigfoot, or just step away from everyday routines, we’re glad to share our small corner of Ontonagon with you. Life’s too short for boring vacations, and the stories in our guestbook remind us of that every season.

Your hosts,

Anthony & Nou

P.S. We promise the stories get better after check-in.
